Brooklyn hip-hop is enjoying a much-needed resurgence. Of course, the late Pop Smoke pioneered the New York borough’s drill movement — providing a platform for artists like Fivio Foreign and Sheff G — with his unique, gruff approach; but in this process of kicking open the door for one rap subgenre, he’s widened BK’s overall awareness aperture. Enter Smoove’L — who refuses to be type-casted as a drill rapper.
In an interview with Complex, the 20-year-old artist remarked, “I’m not a drill rapper … I would never want to be labeled that. I’m an artist. Before I jumped on a drill beat, I made other songs, other types of songs. I just started trying to get to what my city wanted. Then I brought my own style to it.”
While the burgeoning Brooklyn rapper is revered for his ability to compete with the most voracious beats, he doesn’t strictly adhere to this prototype; he carves his own distinct paths thanks to an individualistic style.
On his most recent single, “Just A Dream,” the new Interscope Records signee tackles an upbeat instrumental with zeal, but does it in his own unique way. Ironically sounding somewhat measured in a bombastic environment, “Just A Dream” proves how Smoove’L can blend-in while still propagating his own identity.
Recently, he also released the “Just A Dream” video, which provides more color to his novel aesthetic.
2020 is shaping up to be the year of drill music, and Smoove’L is without question riding the wave, but he’s bringing his own current to the surf.
