Currently on tour with fellow New York rapper, Bodega Bamz, Harlem’s Smoke DZA has never allowed regional favoritism to hinder his appreciation for artists outside of his hometown. A true student of the game, Smoke recognizes talent when he hears it–and pays homage accordingly. The most recent evidence of this respect comes from Smoke’s newest music video for “The Hook Up”, featuring west coast hip-hop ambassadors, Dom Kennedy and Cozz.
Off of Smoke’s recently-released and acclaimed album, Not For Sale, the Complex-premiered video for “The Hook Up” shows the rapper trio touring LA’s streets, with the two west coast rappers showing their New York brother LA’s value offering: great weather, beautiful women, dope houses, and more. It’s a physical manifestation of Smoke’s respect for other iconic hip-hop hubs, and his willingness to expand his musical mind by not confining it to the streets that he was raised on.
Shots of professional videography sprinkled with grittier, homemade camera frames collaborate to formulate the video’s creative and dynamic aesthetic.
