Paying homage to another athlete.
Sheck Wes, the man who owned summer 2018 with his infectious hit “Mo Bamba,” has returned to bless us with a new single, “Sadio Mane (YNWA).”
Following his viral anthem’s footsteps of paying homage to the now Orlando Magic forward, Sheck’s new song is a tribute to the Senegalese soccer player, Sadio Mané. Given Sheck’s mutual ties to the African country, his ode functions dualistically: by both honoring the soccer star and their Senegal roots.
Trying to follow-up a banger as omnipresent as “Mo Bamba” is no easy feat, but Sheck thinks that he’s cracked the code to what will dominate people’s playlists by centering his singles around famous athletes. The jury is out on whether or not “Sadio Mane (YNWA)” will reach the same ubiquity as “Mo Bamba,” but given Sheck’s palpable energy and subversive attitude, it might just have the legs.
