New York’s got another one.

Since hip-hop’s genesis, New York has played a paramount role in shaping the genre’s ethos. From Biggie to A$AP Rocky, the Empire State hasn’t only remained one of the most reliable plugs for trendsetting artists, it’s consistently pushed the creative envelope thanks to rappers with fierce resolve and talent — those who rely as much on their innate abilities as they do their palpable energy.

While other regions — like Atlanta and Chicago — have greatly contributed to hip-hop’s mosaic as of late, New York’s Pop Smoke is here to remind everyone of this city’s greatness.

A young upstart with a visceral flow and gritty edge, Pop Smoke has accrued an impressive following so far throughout his young career off the strength of such records as “Meet The Woo” and “MPR,” streaming at ~100k and ~141k on Spotify, respectively. With a baritone voice that cuts like a serrated knife, Pop Smoke’s presence on a track is palpable; his presence on a video… well, that’s another story.

Today, May 21st, Pop Smoke has come through with the GoddyGoddy-directed visual for his new track, “Welcome To The Party.”

Shot in a DIY manner similar to Chief Keef’s earlier videos, like “John Madden” and “Do It For My Town,” the “Welcome To The Party” visual retains a raw texture, showing the exciting burgeoning artist as the focal point of his crew’s parties.

This video plays like a moment, like something we will look back on fondly when Pop Smoke becomes a fixture in hip-hop.
