The void left in the wake of Mac Miller’s untimely death will never be fully sealed; it’ll continue to close with time’s passing, but there is no complete recovery or healing from a tragedy such as this. But the beautiful thing with an artist is that their work outlives them, providing a perennial connection to their mind and soul.
Mac was a studio rat. Music was his lover, his confidant, his muse, his friend, his collaborator. Music was etched into every fiber of Mac. It was as much his escape as it was his conduit to the world and his fans. In addition to leaving behind the ailing hearts of his loved ones and supporters, Mac bequeathed a wealth of unreleased music upon his passing.
Last week, we heard the first posthumous Mac release in the Free Nationals collaboration with Kali Uchis, “Time.” Like hearing from a close friend after a lapse in communication, Mac’s vocal introduction provided a blanket of comfort; it was just nice to hear his voice. Today marks Mac’s second posthumous release in his feature for 88-Keys’ lovely new track, “That’s Life” featuring Sia.
88-Keys’ soulful production beautifully captures Mac’s spirit, and provides the ideal soundscape for Mac’s heartfelt words. It provides an emotional dichotomy: on the one hand, it’s a stark reminder that Mac is no longer with us; on the other hand, it’s a beautiful reminder of Mac’s gift and penchant for providing timeless music.
Mac will forever be missed. But when we are sitting there, longing for our fallen friend, his music will be there to pick us up, dust us off, and remind us that even though his physical presence has vacated this realm, his soul and words will live on in perpetuity. Mac will always be there, in one way or another.
