Chris Brown dominated the charts this week with fifth studio album, Fortune. The album has been panned by critics, but that didn’t stop fans from purchasing the album which contains the hit single “Strip,” and his latest “Don’t Wake Me Up.” Fortune debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 this week with nearly 135,000 units scanned. With that said, I’m really interested to see how Frank Ocean does next week, especially considering his past feud with Breezy. That’s not to mention the eventful week he’s had in which he’s come out of the closet, performed on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, dropped his album a week early on iTunes, and subsequently had his album pulled from Target retailers.
In other news, Flo Rida hit the charts at number 14 with his latest album, Wild Ones, named after one of the project’s monster hits. If you’re in any major marketplace and tune to the local pop radio station for 30 minutes, I can almost guarantee that you will hear “Wild Ones” or “Good Feeling.” Despite not being a lyricist, you can’t knock Flo Rida’s hustle. He’s somehow managed to bang out hit-after-hit since 2008, and you can’t take that away from him. By the way, in case you’re wondering, Flo’s already sold 6 million plus tracks from the album digitally. The only other notable pre-holiday hip-hop release was Prodigy’s H.N.I.C. 3, which surprisingly charted with less than 4,000 copies sold. I swear I’m in some alternate universe because when did Havoc become so much nicer than P? After listening to a majority of this album, I can honestly say this does not sound like the Prodigy that once spit, “I put my lifetime in between the paper’s lines.” No offense, but if you’re seriously looking for vintage Mobb Deep, cop their discog through 2004’s Amerikaz Nightmare and keep it moving.
